There was a huge increase in migration, either to major cities or to other countries, and airplanes made it possible for people to work abroad and return home on a regular basis; and refrigeration allowed bodies to be preserved for much longer. Migrants were generally suspected of shirking their kinship obligations, and so were eager to demonstrate their continued loyalty to the kinship group: and the funeral, where this loyalty could be made tangible and public, was the perfect place to do it.
