On July 21, 1969, while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the lunar landscape, Michael Collins circled alone aboard Columbia. Every two hours he vanished behind the Moon, severed from terrestrial communication. "I am alone now, truly alone, and absolutely isolated from any known life. I am it," he recorded in Carrying the Fire. "If a count were taken, the score would be three billion plus two over on the other side of the moon, and one plus God knows what on this side."
